In a unique initiative, Vidhu Vinod Chopra has released Zero Se Restart in cinemas today. It is a documentary on his critically acclaimed and commercially successful film, 12th Fail (2023) and the challenges he and his team faced while making it. The 88-minute-long documentary throws light on several fascinating aspects, including its casting process.
Zero Se Restart: Varun Dhawan was considered for the lead role in Vikrant Massey’s 12th Fail
Vikrant Massey played the lead role of Manoj Kumar Sharma in the film, and it was surely one of the finest performances in recent times. However, the team of 12th Fail were also looking at other options before Vikrant was signed, as shown in Zero Se Restart. The film is based on the book ‘Twelfth Fail: Hara Wahi Jo Ladaa Nahi’ and its writer Anurag Pathak desired to have Varun Dhawan essay the role of the protagonist. A few more people in the team also agreed with the idea.
Director Vidhu Vinod Chopra, however, had reservations. In Zero Se Restart, he’s shown praising Varun Dhawan’s acting skills and screen presence but explains to Anurag Pathak and others why he shouldn’t be cast.
Zero Se Restart is directed by Jaskunwar Singh Kohli, who was one of the editors, writers and also the associate director on 12th Fail. The film was based on the real-life story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, who overcame extreme poverty to become an Indian Police Service officer. It also focuses on his love affair with Shraddha Joshi, who cracked the IAS exams, and later married Manoj. While Vikrant Massey played the role of Manoj Kumar Sharma, Shraddha Joshi’s role was essayed by Medha Shankr.
Coming to Varun Dhawan, he’s gearing up for the release of Baby John on December 25. It shows Varun in a never-before-seen action avatar. His upcoming films like Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, Border 2, David Dhawan’s next which is reportedly titled Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai and No Entry 2, co-starring Arjun Kapoor and Diljit Dosanjh.
