When we think of Shefali Shah, what immediately comes to mind is grace, depth, and an incredible command over her craft. Shefali is not just known for her powerful screen presence but also for being articulate, well-read, and deeply thoughtful. Beyond acting, she’s a talented writer who often surprises fans with her poignant self-written poems and inspiring social media posts.

Shefali Shah doesn’t believe in staying off carbs: “Your brain needs carbs, you just can’t survive on protein alone”
Having entertained audiences for decades with her versatile performances, Shefali carries a vibrant aura that makes her a joy to watch and talk to. This warmth and charm came through beautifully in her recent podcast interview with Curly Tales, where she opened up about her roots, her love for food, and how her life experiences have shaped her.
Reminiscing about her early life, Shefali described her upbringing as truly multicultural. Her maternal grandmother was Maharashtrian, her grandfather was Gujarati, her mother, a Gujarati, married a Shetty, and Shefali herself is now married to a Gujarati. “It’s like a mini India”.
She studied at Arya Vidya Mandir and later attended Mithibai College, balancing academics with her passion for theatre. Although she completed her graduation via correspondence, acting was always in her DNA. “In a Shetty household, taking up acting was a big deal,” she shared. “But my parents were quite liberal.” She began working at the age of 16, but her first play was at just 10 years old, where she earned Rs 200 for her performance!
One of the most delightful parts of the conversation was when Shefali spoke about her love for food. “I’m the only non-vegetarian in my family,” she laughed, “and I absolutely love fish.” She’s not just a foodie but also a great cook. Her specialty? A traditional Mangalorean curry made with raw and ripe mangoes, prawns, and moong dal.
Talking about her iconic role in Dil Dhadakne Do, Shefali touched upon how her character stress-eats in moments of frustration, especially when bullied by her unfaithful husband, who constantly body-shames her. “So many women came up to me and said they could relate to that,” she recalled. “It was heartbreaking, but also affirming because it meant the character resonated deeply.”
She also spoke candidly about how staying off carbs is a big no for her. “I tried going off carbs for three months because I wanted to lose weight,” she shared. “And the day I finally had carbs, I slept like a baby! Your brain needs carbs and you just can’t survive on protein alone.”
