In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama’s Rohit Khilnani, trade analyst Taran Adarsh spoke about the changing landscape of the box office and explained why a film earning Rs. 100 crores is no longer considered a major achievement. He pointed out that with changing audience expectations and a growing focus on content-driven cinema, the standards for success have become much higher than before.

Taran Adarsh stated candidly, “If a superstar’s film earns 100 crores, it holds no real value whatsoever. But if a newcomer’s film earns 100 crores, then that holds value.” He went on to explain that leading actors like Shah Rukh Khan have already raised the bar with massive hits such as Pathaan and Jawan, both of which surpassed Rs. 500 crore. At the same time, younger stars like Ranbir Kapoor (Animal) and Vicky Kaushal (Chhava), along with the success of films like Pushpa 2 and Stree 2, have reshaped what box office success means today.
“There’s pressure on actors. If a big star’s film earns Rs. 200 crores, like if Sikandar earns Rs. 200 crores, it still won’t feel impressive,” he noted. “Because Salman did Rs. 300 crores years ago. So, now if he does 200 crores, what’s the big deal? You’re expected to do Rs. 400 or 500 crores. That’s what’s expected of you.”
Moving on to upcoming releases, Adarsh praised Akshay Kumar for consistently bringing fresh content and applauded the trailer of Kesari 2.
“I really liked the trailer. Loved it,” he said. “Akshay Kumar, I’d like to appreciate him. Whether a film works or not is a different matter. But making an effort to bring something new, that effort is very important. And Akshay has been doing that.”
Highlighting Akshay’s previous works like Sarfira, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, PadMan, Mission Raniganj, and Sky Force, Adarsh stated, “Akshay Kumar has made an effort to bring something new. Like I said, whether the film succeeds or not isn’t in his hands, it’s in the hands of the audience. But at least he’s trying. And he’s working non-stop.”
Quoting Karan Johar, who called Kesari 2 “the best performance of Akshay’s career,” Adarsh concluded by saying, “If I go by that statement, then expectations automatically rise. But I feel Akshay must have delivered.”
