Azhar Mahmood named acting head coach of Pakistan Test side ahead of new WTC cycle

Pakistan has named former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood as the acting head coach of the Test side ahead of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.

Mahmood, who has had a long stint as the bowling coach of the side, will take on the additional duty till the expiry of his current contract.

The 50-year-old takes over from Aaqib Javed, who was interim head coach after the departure of Australian quick Jason Gillespie towards the end of 2024.

“A seasoned cricketing mind, Azhar Mahmood steps into the role with an impressive portfolio of experience,” the Pakistan Cricket Board said in a release.

“Having served as the assistant head coach of the national side, Azhar has long been a pivotal part of the team’s strategic core. His red-ball pedigree is underscored by two County Championship titles—an achievement that speaks volumes about his leadership, tactical acumen and unwavering commitment to excellence.

“The PCB is confident that under Azhar’s guidance, the red-ball squad will continue to grow in strength, discipline and performance on the global stage,” it added.

Mahmood’s first series will be a visit from South Africa later in the year for a two-match tour as part of the new WTC cycle.
