The much-loved romantic saga Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) completed 21 glorious years on November 27. The film was a huge hit and it’s heartening to see that it’s doing well even during its re-release. Shah Rukh Khan delivers one of the greatest performances of his career; as Aman, he brings the house down with his antics while in the climax, he makes sure that the eyes of all viewers are moist. One of the poignant scenes is when Rohit (Saif Ali Khan) and Naina (Preity Zinta) find out that Aman (SRK) is dying. Aman is hospitalized and yet, he runs to meet Naina. The scene defied logic as a terminally ill patient running at such high speed could probably prove fatal. Yet, no one complained and the running bit enhanced the impact.
21 Years of Kal Ho Naa Ho EXCLUSIVE: Nikkhil Advani opens up on Shah Rukh Khan’s running scene: “He makes people’s hearts skip a beat when he runs; if I had to think of any other actor who runs as iconically as Shah Rukh, it is Tom Cruise”
Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to director Nikkhil Advani some time back and we asked him about the said scene. He revealed that Shah Rukh Khan has had iconic running scenes in the films he assisted like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001).
Nikkhil Advani said, “Whether its Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, where he’s running on the bridge or Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham where he’s running in his introduction scene, Shah Rukh makes people’s hearts beat faster or makes their hearts skip a beat when he runs! He’s like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible. If I had to think of any other actor who runs as iconically as Shah Rukh, it is Tom Cruise. This is my personal opinion. I am sure that there are other actors who run very well or are dynamic when they take off.”
He added, “Shah Rukh’s run has been timed with wonderful emotions. In Kal Ho Naa Ho, he’s trying to speak with Preity who has just found out that he’s dying. In Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, he’s trying to reach the pooja in his house on time. So, I think Karan Johar and all of us had a knack for timing his runs with great emotions.”
When asked when can we expect him and SRK to work together again, he replied, “A lot of people ask me why I am not working with Shah Rukh Khan or figuring out a way to do it. But I feel that the experience of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kal Ho Naa Ho were so fantastic that one would really have to come up with a flawless script. I would never want to put a daag on the 100% track record that I have.”
