EXCLUSIVE: Abhijeet Bhattacharya responds to controversy over Who Ladki Jo Sabse Alag Hai song in Dua Lipa’s concert; says, “My classic meets masses”
In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, legendary singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya opened up about the controversy surrounding the credit for his iconic song ‘Woh Ladki Jo Sabse Alag Hai.’ The track, from the 1999 film Badshah, was performed by Bhattacharya and became an unforgettable part of Bollywood’s musical legacy. However, recent events at a concert have reignited a debate over whether Shah Rukh Khan or Abhijeet should be credited for the song.
The controversy began when international pop sensation Dua Lipa played the track during her performance, causing an enthusiastic reaction from the crowd, who immediately recognized it as Shah Rukh Sir’s song. This sparked a buzz online, with netizens debating the true credit for the hit. Things took an unexpected turn when Abhijeet son, clarrifies that the song belonged to his father, further fueling the debate.
Abhijeet said, “My son is crazy. When I bought a car, people buy Rolls Royces, Range Rovers. 15 years ago, I used to drive a Porsche Cayenne in Bombay. My son would say, ‘It’s my father’s.’ When we were driving around in a BMW, he would say, ‘It’s my father’s.’ He never says, ‘It’s mine,’ always ‘It’s my father’s.’
I tell him, I am in this Rolls Royce. The Rolls Royce isn’t mine, I am the owner of this car.’ Rolls Royce belongs to the person who made it. You can’t say you own Rolls Royce or Range Rover. The person who made it owns it.”
Abhijeet told us, that it is uncalled for, adding that people creating it are like ‘mosquitoes’ He said, “When Dua Lipa’s concert happened, and my classic song ‘Who Ladki Jo Sabse Alag Hai’ played in the background, all the big people called me. They were saying, ‘Abhijeet, your song, your song.’ I sent Dua Lipa a thank-you note because my classic song meets the masses. Who made that classic? Anu Malik, the writer, and me. Anyone can own the song, it’s a product, but you can’t own the brand. We are like a brand.”
Reflecting on the song’s initial reception, Abhijeet recalled how ‘Who Ladki Jo Sabse Alag Hai’ was considered a “super flop” when it first released 25 years ago. He said, “When this song came out 25 years ago, it was a super flop. We were really sad that the song didn’t work, especially when songs like Badshah Oh Badshah were playing. The film was a flop, but the music was a super hit.”
He added, “The song ‘Who Ladki Jo Sabse Alag Hai’ went viral four years ago during the World Cup, with the mashup, and the song became a hit. Everyone started shouting.”
He expressed gratitude towards Dua Lipa for giving his song global recognition but clarified, “I just thanked Dua Lipa. That’s all I said. But then, people started making controversies.”
