Host Pakistan will look to revive its ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign when it takes on archrival India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai on Sunday.

Coming into the contest after a 60-run reverse at the hands of New Zealand, the Mohammad Rizwan-led side will draw inspiration from the its previous Champions Trophy meeting against India.

The two teams last met in the final of the previous edition of the tournament, in 2017, where Pakistan prevailed by a whopping 180 runs to clinch its maiden title.

India won the toss and inserted Pakistan in. But things went out of its control when opening batter Fakhar Zaman, on three runs, was caught off a no-ball in Jasprit Bumrah’s over.

Zaman made the most of the life granted to him and added 129 runs for the first wicket with Azhar Ali. He went onto hit his maiden international hundred—114 off 106 deliveries—before Hardik Pandya got him out.

Babar Azam’s 52-ball 46 combined set up Pakistan for a strong finish. Mohammed Hafiz ensured that Pakistan posted a mammoth 338 runs with an unbeaten 57 off 37 balls.

India’s response was ravaged by a menacing opening burst from Mohammad Amir. He accounted for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli inside his first two overs before dismissing the in-form Shikhar Dhawan.

India’s veteran pairing of Yuvraj Singh and M.S. Dhoni was handed the task to put its side back on track from a precarious looking 33/3. They added only 19 runs before Shadab Khan pinned the southpaw in front. Dhoni departed three deliveries later and when Shadab had his second wicket in Kedar Jadhav, India was staring down the barrel at 72/6.

Pandya’s 43-ball 76 formed the backbone of his 80-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja that brought semblance of a fight. But India’s last remnants of hope were extinguished when a mix-up between the wickets cost Pandya his wicket.

Pandya fell with India’s score at 152 and the tail could add merely six more, as India fell to its archrival in an ICC event for the first time in eight years. For Sarfaraz Ahmed’s Pakistan, it was the first ICC title in eight years.
