Himesh Reshammiya entered the Bollywood playback scene as a singer, his unconventional style initially met with skepticism. “Singing style ko criticism sirf kuch 2-3 months tha. July me wo gaana aaya tha Aashiq Banaya Aapne, by next March I got the Filmfare Award,” he recalled in a exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama.

Initially, Reshammiya faced significant criticism for his singing style. “First kuch months me kyunki unconventional singing thi, nasal thi, high pitch tha. Aashiq Banaya ko jab remix karke, it was a thumping beat with an emotional song,” he explained. Many found his nasal quality jarring and his high-pitched vocals unconventional. However, when the remix version of Aashiq Banaya Aapne was released, pairing an emotionally charged melody with thumping beats, the response shifted dramatically. The song quickly became a massive hit, climbing charts and dominating music playlists.
Nasal voice became a sensation
“Everything was so different for the world to actually just react, so there was a criticism for the nasal thing. But when the wave grew on, everyone realized that it was infectious,” he shared. As the song’s popularity soared, so did Reshammiya’s acceptance as a singer. The initial backlash began to subside as audiences embraced the fresh and infectious style he brought to the industry. By the following March, the overwhelming success of Aashiq Banaya Aapne culminated in a prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer. This milestone marked a significant turning point, proving that his vocal style, once deemed unconventional, had now become a sensation.
The song that turned criticism into celebration
What made Aashiq Banaya Aapne stand out was its emotional depth combined with a pulsating rhythm, a rare fusion in Bollywood music at the time. The song not only resonated with the youth but also solidified Reshammiya’s identity as a singer. “Then wo itna bada hit hua, in terms of numbers fir wo accept ho gaya, toh uske baad itna criticism kabhi aaya nahi,” he stated. With such an overwhelming response, the criticism faded into the background, and his distinct style was no longer questioned but celebrated.
