The lovely documentary The Roshans dropped on Netflix in January 2025 and has received love from all quarters. The show has been loved not just for its treatment and star value but also because it speaks about not-so-known aspects of the late Roshan, his talented sons Rakesh Roshan and Rajesh Roshan and his dashing actor grandson, Hrithik Roshan. The first episode focuses on the life of Roshan Lal Nagrath. His sons and grandson changed their surname to Roshan; in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama in January after the release of the show, we asked Rakesh Roshan about this aspect.

Rakesh Roshan explained, “My father also used Roshan in the credits. But in the official documents, it was always Roshan Lal Nagrath. After he passed away, when I used to meet film industry people, they used to be like ‘Arre aap Roshan saab ke bete hai?’ and greet me warmly. I was Rakesh Nagrath then and I decided to use my father’s name. Hence, I changed my name to Rakesh Roshan. This is how Nagrath faded away and Roshan came in.”

The Roshans, in a way, also threw light on the lesser-known aspect – in the initial films which Rakesh Roshan produced like Aap Ke Deewane (1980), Kaamchor (1982), Jaag Utha Insan (1984), Bhagwaan Dada (1986), his name was spelt was Raakesh Roshan. The same was also seen in his directorial debut, Khudgarz (1987).

When asked about it, Rakesh Roshan replied, “Somebody told me to add an extra ‘A’ and that if I did so, I’ll succeed as an actor. But nothing of that sort happened (laughs). Hence, I went back to my original spelling.”

The Roshans consists of interviews of various film personalities who have worked closely with Rakesh Roshan like Shah Rukh Khan, Javed Akhtar, Shatrughan Sinha, etc. One actor that fans wished to see was Rishi Kapoor, a close friend of Rakesh Roshan who sadly passed away five years ago. Interestingly, while the actor was born on September 4, the filmmaker celebrated his birthday on September 6.

Rakesh Roshan sighed, “I missed him very, very much. He would have given a lot more insight.”
