Veteran actor Jaya Bachchan recently dismissed Akshay Kumar’s 2017 film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, which promoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. She also shared her thoughts on the current state of film production.
Jaya Bachchan questions title of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha; says, “I would never go to watch a film with such a name”
In an interview with India TV, 76-year-old Jaya Bachchan said she would never watch a film titled Toilet: Ek Prem Katha.
“Just look at the title of the film; I would never go to watch a film with such a name. Yeh koi naam hai? Is that really a name?” she said. She then turned to the audience, asking if they would watch a film with such a title.
After noticing only a few hands raised in response, Jaya Bachchan remarked, “Among so many people, hardly four want to watch the film; it’s very sad. Yeh toh flop hai.”
As the discussion moved to Hindi films that align with government policies and campaigns, Jaya Bachchan commented, “In today’s day and age, even political parties are making films, and to discuss all that, we need a lot of time.”
Akshay Kumar’s 2017 film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha highlighted the need for sanitation and ending open defecation. Directed by Shree Narayan Singh, the film starred Bhumi Pednekar, Anupam Kher, and Divyenndu. It was a blockbuster, grossing over ₹300 crore.
Akshay also starred in another social drama, PadMan, which focused on women’s hygiene and the stigma around it.
