What was your reaction when you first heard about these bootleg filmmakers in Malegaon?
It was a great fortune for me to be a part of Superboys of Malegaon because I had heard about Malegaon’s bootleg filmmakers before. It seemed like a miracle that these boys, who were struggling in their daily lives, had managed to make it into the film industry. Setting up such an industry in a place like Malegaon is an incredible achievement.

Did you say yes to the film immediately?
Yes. Firstly, it felt like a dream world, and I knew a film like this would not be made again and again. That was one reason. Secondly, Reema Kagti was directing it—I had previously worked with her on Gold, which was a great experience. This time, it was equally fantastic. Additionally, the film had excellent producers like Excel Entertainment, Tiger Baby, and MGM Studios. There were many reasons to say yes, including the fact that my character was amazing. So yes, I was all in for it.

What was it like working with your talented co-stars Adarsh Gourav, Shashank Arora, and others?
All the actors were incredibly talented and brought great energy to the set. It was one of the most fantastic experiences I’ve had, working with such young talent. The biggest challenge for me came from Reema Kagti herself—she gives a lot of creative freedom, but before shooting, a lot of detailed work takes place. That preparation helped me rise to the challenge successfully.

Since we had in-depth discussions before the shoot, everything was very clear. The script was well-written, and having worked with Reema before, we had a good understanding. If I had any thoughts, I would share them with her, and she would give feedback. I always listen to my director, read the script repeatedly, and improvise as needed. Reema allows improvisation when it serves the film. She placed me alongside actors in their mid-20s, while I am no longer in that age bracket—that was a challenge in itself. But I did my best, and I’m grateful to the whole team for supporting me in portraying this character with honesty and conviction.

Everyone contributed immensely—the actors, the technical team, and every department. Adarsh Gourav, Shashank Arora, Pallav Singh, Anuj, Saqib, Manjari, Riddhi Muskaan—there is so much talent in this film. Gyanendra Pandey and Sanjay Dadhich were also outstanding. We had a great time, and the experience was truly enjoyable.

What’s next for you?
I am currently working on a film titled Jat, produced by Mythri Movie Makers. In fact, I was in Hyderabad shooting for Jat when Superboys of Malegaon was released. Working on Jat with Sunny Deol sir has been an unforgettable experience. I also have an upcoming show produced by Kabir Khan sir.

What do you have to say about the success of Chhaava?
A lot of hard work went into Chhaava. Including the shoot, we spent almost six months on training and filming. Initially, we underwent intense training in horse riding, sword fighting, spear wielding, and group combat. It was a rigorous process with technical guidance from both Indian and international action directors. Even during the shoot, we continued training for specific sequences.

This is my first historical film, and I have never done this kind of work before. It was a unique and enriching experience. Laxman Utekar sir had envisioned a very special climax scene, and we shot it exactly as he had conceived it. Working with Vicky Kaushal was also a great experience—I really enjoyed filming that sequence. The response from the audience has been beyond our expectations, and I couldn’t be happier.
