Sooraj Barjatya had an interesting conversation with Mayank Shekhar of Mid-Day, during which he spoke about his films, his journey and also that of his production house, Rajshri Productions, started by his grandfather, Tarachand Barjatya. He also talked about his last film Uunchai (2022), starring Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani, Anupam Kher and Danny Denzongpa. He revealed that getting Danny on board was challenging. In fact, the film went on floors though the actor had not given his nod.
Sooraj Barjatya reveals Danny Denzongpa took time to give his nod for Uunchai: “Every day, just to tempt him, I used to click pictures of nature and send him. He would reply with a picture of beer!”
Sooraj Barjatya began by saying, “He doesn’t shoot in the summers as he gets boils on his skin. I had to finish the shoot before April.”
As for how Danny Denzongpa was cast, he revealed, “It’s an interesting story. The casting was complete, but we had not cast Danny ji. I was clear that I wanted him. I called him and he said, ‘Script bhejo’. I sent him the script and he said, ‘The script is good, but I have never done a guest role until now’. I replied, ‘Danny ji, please consider’. He said, ‘Accha main batata hoon. Sochta hoon’.”
Meanwhile, Uunchai went on floors and the shoot commenced in Nepal. Sooraj Barjatya raised laughs as he said, “I was shooting in the Himalayas. Every day, just to tempt him, I used to click pictures of nature and send him. He would reply with a picture of his beer brand (laughs)! This used to happen every day.”
He added, “I used to be asked, ‘Who’ll play this character for whom the rest of friends are doing so much in the film’. I used to assure, ‘Woh aayenge’. (To be on the safe side), we had also kept a list ready (of actors who could play that role).”
Sooraj Barjatya then stated, “Finally, he agreed to a 15-day shoot. It was the reason for a big celebration; more than Bachchan sir, getting Danny sir was (a bigger feat).”
He also said, “Danny ji is a lovely person to work with. But if he did not get a shot right, he used to get very upset. He would throw his jacket and shout at his dress man. Darr lagta tha yeh dekh ke.”
