You experienced immense success on OTT with Jubilee. What prompted you to return with Khakee: The Bengal Chapter, despite your superstardom on the big screen?
I said yes for two reasons. First, of course, is Neeraj Pandey, whom I have known for a very long time. I’ve always wanted to work with him, and we share a great friendship. That was one part of it. The second reason is the character—I loved its sketch and depth. But more importantly, as someone who represents Bengal, I felt this was a significant project. After a long time, we have a major OTT production focusing on Bengal—Khakee: The Bengal Chapter. The show brings together a lot of local talent, technicians, and of course, the essence of Kolkata.
Prosenjit Chatterjee talks Khakee, his love for OTT, and upcoming projects; says, “Cinema has its charm, but OTT is challenging”
The depiction of Kolkata in Khakee is quite striking.
Yes, I think the way they have captured the locations is truly interesting. The visuals feel fresh and untouched in a way. I really wanted Khakee: The Bengal Chapter to be made, and when they asked me to be a part of it, I couldn’t say no. It was a professional commitment, but also an emotional connection to the project. Working with Neeraj Pandey as the showrunner and a young, talented director was an amazing experience. The writing team was exceptional, making the project even more special. Neeraj has a unique approach—his films are commercially appealing yet deeply rooted in reality. From television to cinema, he has consistently delivered outstanding work.
Does the long-format storytelling of OTT take up too much of your time?
After Jubilee, I took on Khakee, and I’ll soon be working on another OTT show, though I can’t disclose details yet. I truly enjoyed working on Jubilee because it was my OTT debut, and the experience was very special to me. It introduced me to a new audience and allowed me to explore a fresh medium. I’m grateful to the Jubilee team, especially Vikramaditya Motwane. I find the OTT format incredibly interesting. Cinema will always have its unique charm, but OTT provides a different kind of storytelling experience. Unlike films, where the story follows a single track, web series explore multiple layers, characters, and subplots over an extended period. For an actor, this is a fantastic challenge. Moreover, OTT allows filmmakers to experiment in ways that may not be possible in traditional cinema. Audiences are responding positively to this format, which makes it even more exciting.
What’s next for you?
Right now, I’m shooting in Hampi for Vijaynagarer Hirey, the fourth film in the Kakababu series. It’s scorching hot, but we’re enjoying the shoot! My next release will be Devi Chowdhurani, where I play Bhabanicharan Pathak. It’s another period drama, and I’m looking forward to it.
