Taapsee Pannu, known for her diverse film choices, recently reflected on the completion of eight years since the release of Naam Shabana. The 2017 action-spy thriller saw her take on an intense and physically demanding role, a rare choice for Bollywood actresses at the time.
8 Years of Naam Shabana: Taapsee Pannu reveals she doesn’t want to do female spy thriller films; says, “I did it so many years ago that now if I do it again, it’s like very weird”
Taapsee, who had previously played Shabana in Baby (2015), shared how the overwhelming response to her character led to the creation of Naam Shabana. “The response that my character received in Baby made the filmmakers plan an entire film based on Shabana aka Meera. Frankly, there was no sequel or prequel.”
Directed by Shivam Nair, Naam Shabana followed the journey of Shabana, a young woman recruited by an intelligence agency and rigorously trained to eliminate a dangerous arms dealer. The film was praised for its gripping storyline and action sequences, with Taapsee performing several stunts herself.
Akshay Kumar, who appeared in the film, had previously commended her action skills. “Taapsee did a tremendous job in Pink. I saw her doing the fights in Baby and the kind of action she did, I have seen no female do it with so much perfection. It was very inspiring for me to see her. A lot of inspiration for Naam Shabana came from the way Taapsee performed in Baby.”
The actress also reflected on how action-spy thrillers were not a mainstream trend when she took on the role. “Actually, action spy thrillers were not in like fashion. Now, everybody wants to do a spy thriller. I did it so many years ago that now if I do it again, it’s like very weird, why are you repeating yourself? I’ve done something which was so remarkable back then that I don’t want to touch it and spoil it again.”
Currently, Taapsee Pannu is returning to the action-thriller genre with Gandhari, where she portrays a mother fighting to rescue her abducted child. The film, slated for release this year, features her performing her own stunts, promising a raw and intense cinematic experience.
