Sunny Deol, who is making a grand return with Jaat, recently appeared on a podcast with Komal Nahta. Speaking about his film, which will be released in theatres on April 10, Sunny revealed how he selects his films and specifically how he chose Jaat.
Sunny Deol on his script selection process, “I trust my instincts, they are like a personal computer”
The actor, popular for his ‘Dhai kilo ka haath’ dialogue disclosed that he has never been scared to select unconventional stories or think about how they will perform at the box office. He believes that every story cannot be the kind that excites the audience to the extent that they flock in huge numbers. However, as an actor, he chooses projects that resonate with him and complement his personality. “I don’t have any set criteria. I believe that when a story is narrated to someone, if it touches them and feels good, that’s enough. I trust my instincts. Instincts are like a personal computer—they tell you quickly whether you are thinking right or wrong,” he added further.
When asked whether he has a dedicated team for script readings, he responded by stating that it is a one-man show and he listens to the stories alone, making a swift decision. “I want to do it, let’s see how we can make it happen”, is the actor’s mantra while choosing the story.
During the podcast, the actor also revealed that he never reads the script and prefers listening to the theme of the project. He has never been keen on reading or writing and has always been a backbencher in his academics.
He further revealed how the story of Jaat came about. When Gadar 2 was released and it became a hit, the actor met the producers from Mythri Movie Makers a long time ago at the airport. The production company expressed interest in working with Sunny Deol, to which he responded, “Sure, whenever it happens, we’ll do it when the time feels right.”
Initially, the actor wanted south director Hanu Raghavapudi to direct Jaat after working on several projects with him during the pandemic. However, due to other commitments, the director couldn’t take on the film. From here, the hunt for a suitable director began and Telugu director Gopichand Malineni ultimately directed the film.
