Randeep Hooda is returning to the action genre after a five-year hiatus, taking on the lead role in the upcoming film Jaat, which is set to hit theatres across India this week. The film marks Hooda’s comeback to full-scale action after his Hollywood debut in Netflix’s Extraction (2020), where he starred alongside Chris Hemsworth.

In Jaat, Hooda plays Ranatunga—a larger-than-life, formidable character that taps into the actor’s physicality and intensity. Known for his work in biopics and police dramas, Hooda says Jaat offers a refreshing change of pace. “I have always loved action as a genre. There is something raw, visceral, and thrilling about it. After playing intense characters in biopics and embodying law enforcement roles, getting to unleash my dark side as the menacing Ranatunga has been exhilarating,” he said.
The actor added that the role gave him a chance to revisit a space he had been missing. “The choreography, the high-octane sequences, and the sheer physicality of the role—it has been a challenging yet fulfilling experience. Playing a character who is as ruthless as he is charismatic is something I’m really looking forward to showcasing,” Hooda added.
Extraction, directed by Sam Hargrave and produced by the Russo Brothers, was a global success and earned Hooda praise for his performance in a physically demanding role. “Extraction was the first of its kind for me—to be an Indian actor taking on a full-blown action role in the West was a thrilling experience,” he reflected.
Directed by a yet-to-be-announced filmmaker, Jaat is described as a gritty action thriller rooted in the power dynamics of rural India. It explores themes of revenge, honor, and survival, with Hooda’s character at the center of the storm. Ranatunga is portrayed as a brutal, cunning, and unrelenting figure whose presence shapes the narrative.
With Jaat, Randeep Hooda looks to re-establish his presence in the action space on home turf, delivering a performance that combines brute force with emotional complexity. The film’s release this week is expected to reignite interest in action dramas with a rooted, rural backdrop.
