Sequels are well-known for major changes: primarily in heroines and directors! We wonder what happened to Ileana D’Cruz, who played Ajay Devgn’s wife in Raid, when Vaani Kapoor plays that role in Raid 2! The third major entity is the composer, who is often changed for multiple reasons. And thereby we have interesting tales.
From Lage Raho Munna Bhai to Dream Girl 2: When the original composer is not roped in for the sequel
With Krrish 4, a joint production between Rakesh Roshan’s Filmkraft Productions and Yash Raj Films, Rajesh Roshan will not only return to the franchise (Koi…Mil Gaya, Krrish, Krrish 3) thanks to brother Rakesh and nephew Hrithik Roshan, but interestingly also to the YRF fold after his musical hit scores with them (Doosara Aadmi, Kaala Patthar) in the 1970s!
Raid (2018) had music by Amit Trivedi, but Raid 2, due for release, has a horde of composers contributing songs while Amit does one track and the background score as well—we have a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan composition reworked by Rochak Kohli and Yo Yo Honey Singh and Sachet–Parampara also coming in!
In the just-released Kesari Chapter 2, wherein the music composers were different, Arko’s landmark song, ‘Teri mitti’ from Kesari was also used.
The Pritam Factor
There is much speculation for over a decade now about a fourth instalment of Dhoom. In 2011, composer Pritam told me that though he was also offered a choice between Ek Tha Tiger and Dhoom:3, but chose the latter as Dhoom was “my brand”.
Pritam was also brought in by Imtiaz Ali for his Love Aaj Kal 2, but both the 2020 film and the music were a far cry from the original 2009 movie. Pritam also scored the second and third films in the Golmaal franchise (Golmaal Returns, Golmaal 3), taking over from Vishal-Shekhar (Golmaal—Fun Unlimited) but lost out on the fourth film, Golmaal Again, to multiple composers.
In the case of Race, when the true sequel, Race 2 was made by Tips Films and Abbas-Mustan half a decade after the first, Pritam did the music again, but when Tips Films made Race 3 with a different storyline and setup, out went the composer, who was ‘trendily’ replaced by a coterie of music makers, though again his cult song, ‘Allah duhai hai’ was refashioned within the film by JAM8, a band mentored by Pritam himself.
Loss and gain
And speaking of cult songs, Nikhil-Vinay, who had to make do with an intrusion by Taz (Stereo Nation) of one daaru (alcohol)-based song in Tum Bin (2001) got an “extended version” (actually modified) of their creation, ‘Koi fariyaad’ (which had been sung by Jagjit Singh) in the sequel, Tum Bin 2, 15 years later. The song was ‘Teri fariyaad’ and was redone by the new composer of the film, Ankit Tiwari, who got Rekha Bhardwaj to sing with Jagjit Singh. Nikhil-Vinay were credited on the album, but did not work on the track.
In Dream Girl 2, Meet Bros lost their “solo composer” right (as in the 2019 Dream Girl) and got just one fresh song and a re-creation from the original film, ‘Dil ka telephone’. The rest of the songs were done by Tanishk Bagchi and Arko.
Sohail Sen, who composed just one song in Housefull 3, was however “promoted” to three songs in Housefull 4 though both films had other composers.
The producers’ affinity and bond with a composer also makes a difference: Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar retained Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy from Don (in which they re-created two songs from the original Kalyanji-Anandji musical chartbuster score in the 1978 Don, as the new film was its remake) in the fully original Don 2 (2011). They were also on board in Rock On 2 after Rock On!!!.
One of the earliest sequels in Hindi cinema was Nigahen (1989) from Harmesh Malhotra, after his blockbuster, Nagina (1986). Laxmikant-Pyarelal, with whom Malhotra had a long association from 1973 to 1992, were the obvious choices in the new film, which continued the story. And Sachin-Jigar too have been retained by producer Dinesh Vijan and director Amar Kaushik in Stree 2.
As for S.S. Rajamouli, his cousin M.M. Kreem was obviously there in both the Bahubali films. And Vishal Bhardwaj was both producer and composer in Ishqiya and its sequel, Dedh Ishqiya.
Sadly, in more cases than not, the original composer, even if he has done an extraordinary job, is almost never repeated. Anu Malik’s Munna Bhai MBBS and Hera Pheri remain classic examples of this malaise, where the second film went elsewhere. Each Fukrey, Aashiqui, Murder, Raaz, Baaghi, Singham and Tiger franchise film and more have had changing musical soundscapes and whether the storyline continues or not, a different composer comes in.
