Anupam Kher launched the new teaser of his directorial venture, Tanvi The Great, at a multiplex in Mumbai. The earlier teaser was presented first; it simply showed the back shots of the protagonist. At the event, the second teaser was unveiled and it also informed viewers that the name of the actress playing Tanvi is Shubhangi. Kajol was the chief guest and she welcomed Shubhangi to the media. While interacting with the press, Anupam Kher was asked about the importance of launching new faces. The actor gave an interesting reply to this question.
Tanvi The Great teaser launch: Anupam Kher recalls performing scenes “written on cigarette packs”: “Some of those films were super hits while some films with bound scripts flopped”; also adds, “Hero-heroine concept is outdated”
He began by saying, “I think it’s very important. We don’t want to launch faces. We launch talent. There’s a difference. You launch faces for products. Talent is for stories and for cinematic medium. I, myself, am one of them. More than 40 years ago, I got work (as a film actor). Kaam ki wajah se main barkaraar raha hoon.”
He continued, “Also, I was very clear that I’ll be casting someone from my school. We need trained actors. When I debuted, you had to look like a certain person. Baal hone chahiye the, woh bhi khaas kisam ke. Ab jaise aap dikhte ho, woh aapka plus point hai. This is because the casting director is looking for various faces for various characters.”
Anupam also remarked, “This whole idea of hero-heroine has to go. You need actors. Outside India, no one says, ‘Yeh hero hai’, ‘Yeh heroine hai’, ‘Yeh character actor hai’, ‘Yeh villain hai’. I tried to personally break that myth. I was 28 when I played the role of a 65-year-old man and I survived as a result of that.”
Last year, Anupam Kher grabbed eyeballs when he revealed “I have even performed scenes written on the backs of cigarette packs.” On this, he said, “We have started scripts only recently, 4-5 years ago. Uske pehle kahan milte the scripts? Even then, we have made some amazing cinema. There are films where I was given scenes which were literally written on cigarette boxes. And those films were super hits! And there are films where I was given bound scripts and they failed. Zaroori nahin hai ki bound script mila ho toh kamaal ka hi hota hai. There are bad bound scripts also.”
Anupam Kher further said, “At least now, we are more organized. It took us one year to write this script. We have been to Goa, Delhi etc. to pen the script. I have made a film which can resonate with the world audience and I hope it does that as its theme.”
