At the inaugural edition of the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) held in Mumbai, Shah Rukh Khan stole the spotlight not just with his charisma, but with heartfelt insights into his personal life. Speaking during a session titled The Journey: From Outsider to Ruler featuring Deepika Padukone, the superstar reflected on what it means to be a husband, a father, and a man in the spotlight who still values laughter at home.
Shah Rukh Khan opens up on parenting; says kids treat him like a joke
While the session largely focused on his cinematic journey and rise to stardom, SRK’s reflections on parenthood struck an emotional chord. Addressing the popular notion of loneliness at the top, Shah Rukh Khan said, “You know you’re asked if it’s lonely at the top. I would just like to tell everyone here, those who are young and have kids, even those who are my age and have kids. You will never be lonely if you can make your children laugh, and those who don’t have children, if you can make your parents laugh, will never be lonely.”
The actor, who is father to Aryan Khan, Suhana Khan, and AbRam Khan, revealed that humour has always been his bridge to connection at home – even when he’s trying to discipline his children. Sharing an anecdote that left the audience in splits, he added, “I am very funny for my kids. I have never scolded my kids ever. Deepika ko bhi nahin daata when she debuted in Om Shanti Om! I tell my kids sternly, ‘You have to sleep by 10:00 pm. Mumma has said it’. They troll me by saying, ‘Oh My God’, ‘S-R-K’, ‘Bete ko haath lagane se pehle (Before you raise your hand on your kids)…’. They do all this. I am the joke in my house but more important is the fact that I make my children happy, my family happy and my kids happy. And if you are young, make your parents happy. Then, you’ll never feel lonely in your life. That’s the trick!”
From offering life advice to playfully calling himself a joke in his own home, Shah Rukh reminded fans once again why he remains one of the most relatable and beloved stars in the industry. Despite being at the peak of fame for over three decades, SRK continues to embrace simplicity, connection, and laughter at home – and that, perhaps, is his real superpower. The candid admission not only showed SRK’s self-awareness but also highlighted his ability to find humour even in parental struggles.
