Despite having over twenty years of experience in the industry, singer Mika Singh has avoided attending award shows. He explains that he doesn’t grasp the logic behind these events, especially when an artist with a better song is overlooked in favor of another. In a conversation with host Subhankar Mishra on his YouTube channel, Mika shared an example from the Filmfare Awards, where Sonu Nigam lost to Ayushmann Khurrana.
Mika Singh criticizes Filmfare for favouring Ayushmann Khurrana over Sonu Nigam; says, “If you’re not going to respect them, then don’t even invite them”
In the conversation, Mika spoke candidly about his views on award shows in the industry. He revealed, “I have given numerous hit songs but have never received a nomination. The reason is that years ago, around 2011, I had shared the message that whichever song might be a hit… kindly do not keep it for a nomination. It hurts when a song which has not been such a hit ends up winning.”
Mika then recalled a specific example and shared, “For instance, Sonu Nigam’s song was really great ‘Abhi Mujhe Main Kahin.’ On the other hand, my younger brother Ayushmann Khurrana had ‘Paani Da’ out. So, that Filmfare award went to Ayushmann. Now, what is this? Is it because of the audience, or is it something that’s been sold or bought? I don’t understand. But Sonu Nigam truly deserved it. Award shows should recognize that while a few songs may be hits, they must always show respect to the legends. If you’re not going to respect them, then don’t even invite them. It’s better not to invite them at all than to bring them in just to humiliate them.”
Sonu Nigam was nominated at the 2013 Filmfare Awards for his song ‘Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin’ from the film Agneepath. However, he lost the award to Ayushmann Khurrana, who won for his song ‘Paani Da’ from Vicky Donor.
Mika then shared that he had just one request for Sonu Nigam regarding the situation. He suggested that Sonu should focus solely on singing at these shows and earn as much as he can, without worrying about the awards.
