KL Rahul and Yashavi Jaiswal recorded the highest opening partnership for India in Test cricket at Headingley, Leeds, during the side’s opening game against England on Friday.
The left-right pair broke the record held by Sunil Gavaskar and K Srikkanth, who added 64 against England in 1986.
Jaiswal and Rahul saw off the new-ball challenge from England, to put on 91 for the first wicket to give India a strong start.
The partnership was finally broken after Rahul (42) edged a fuller deliver from Brydon Carse to Joe Root at second slip.
This was the second 50+ opening partnership between Jaiswal and Rahul, after the 201-run stand they put together against Australia in Perth in 2014.
