There’s something uniquely memorable about first solo trips – the excitement, the uncertainty, and, of course, the stories that last a lifetime. For actress Vaani Kapoor, that unforgettable first solo adventure took place in none other than New York City. In a candid conversation with Travel Peacock Magazine, the actress opened up about the spontaneous decision that led her to the Big Apple—and how it wasn’t all smooth sailing.
Vaani Kapoor reveals being “utterly lost” during her first solo trip in New York; says, “Don’t travel like I do”
“I actually once went to New York, and I was utterly lost,” Vaani admitted, laughing at the memory. What was supposed to be a quick detour after a work trip to Florida turned into a bit of a travel conundrum. “I remember spending my first day in the hotel because I didn’t know where to go or what to do since I was being very spontaneous. I had been in Florida for work and then decided to take off to New York without knowing anything over there.”
Far from the glamor and polish we often associate with celebrity travel, Vaani’s story is refreshingly relatable. Like many first-time solo travellers, she leaned on friends to help her find her bearings. “Eventually, I reached out to my friends, asking them to tell me where to go because I was feeling super lost. My first days are not always the best, especially in a place like New York. However, I slowly got accustomed to it and started figuring things out. That’s when I fell in love with New York.”
From being overwhelmed to falling head over heels for the city that never sleeps, Vaani’s journey reflects the curve most solo travellers find themselves on: confusion, adjustment, and finally, joy.
And while she may not claim to be the most efficient packer, she’s got some light-hearted advice for those setting off on their own journeys—especially solo female travellers.
“Don’t travel like I do,” she quipped. “I travel with my entire house in my suitcase. I practically carry everything in my bag, and I’m always paying for extra baggage. That’s not the smartest thing to do.”
Vaani’s tip? Travel light. Not just for convenience, but because you’re bound to pick up new things along the way. “You’ll end up buying something or the other anyway. And yes, I always have excess baggage with me. My sister constantly scolds me because she’s like, ‘Why can’t you ever travel light?’”
Admitting she hates packing but does it anyway, Vaani offered a practical packing hack for over-packers: vacuum bags. “Use those vacuum bags to store all your clothes in and vacuum-seal them to create more space in your bags,” she said.
Speaking of the professional front, the actress was recently seen in Khel Khel Mein, opposite Akshay Kumar, followed by the Ajay Devgn starrer Raid 2. She was gearing up for the release of her next film, Abir Gulaal, marking the return of Pakistani actor Fawad Khan. However, the film has been banned from release in India due to the ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan after the terror attack in Pahalgam.
