Panchayat Season 4 review: Story takes a backseat, but entertainment and mass appeal stay strong

Director: Akshat Vijaywargiya, Deepak Kumar Mishra

Synopsis:
PANCHAYAT SEASON 4 is the story of a dramatic election in a village. After the events of the third part, Brij Bhushan Dubey (Raghubir Yadav) aka the unofficial Pradhan ji of Phulera is recuperating. He got shot on his shoulder and his hand is in a sling. Abhishek Tripathi (Jitendra Kumar), the Sachiv, is in trouble as Bhushan has slapped a case under IPC Section 323. Pradhan ji has filed a case under Section 307, that is attempt to murder, on Bhushan (Durgesh Kumar). The belief is that Bhushan joined hands with MLA Chandrakishore Singh (Pankaj Jha) to kill Pradhan ji. The Panchayat elections will be held soon and it further adds to the tension. Pradhan ji, Sachiv, Prahlad (Faisal Malik) and Vikas (Chandan Roy) campaign for Pradhan ji’s wife Manju Devi (Neena Gupta). Bhushan is meanwhile joined by Madhav (Bulloo Kumar) and Binod (Ashok Pathak) and they go all out to ensure that Bhushan’s wife Kranti Devi (Sunita Rajwar) becomes the new Pradhan of Phulera. This leads to chaos, scuffles, in-fighting, corruption allegations, police raids and much more. What happens next forms the rest of the series.

Panchayat Season 4 Story Review:
Chandan Kumar’s story is not much this season as it’s all about the conflict between the two factions. Chandan Kumar’s screenplay, however, is consistent. The writer has added enough fun moments to ensure that the audience gets the kind of entertainment that they expect from this series. Chandan Kumar’s dialogues, as expected, are hilarious and also hard-hitting in places. Some one-liners can become meme-worthy. Though PANCHAYAT is a family show, there have been usage of abusive language in the past. But Season 4 doesn’t have a single abuse and hence, it’s truly a “clean” season.

Akshat Vijaywargiya and Deepak Kumar Mishra’s direction is splendid. The previous season had dropped just 13 months ago and hence; there was a worry if the makers rushed into making and releasing Season 4. Thankfully, all such thoughts go out of the window in the first episode itself. The season starts on a slow note but picks up big time once Sachiv gets drunk and goes to meet Bhushan. Also, this time, we see in-fighting and even poaching take place between the rival parties and it adds a lot to the show. Since the stakes are high, political controversies take place, further keeping the audience hooked. Two scenes that stand out are the rival factions racing to clean the school bathroom and the anti-corruption raid. The scene where Sachiv, Pradhan ji, Prahlad and Vikas go to meet the MP (Swananad Kirkire) is too funny. If PANCHAYAT was a film, this scene would have brought the house down in cinemas. The last 15 minutes leave an impact and also excite the audience for the next season.

On the flipside, though this is supposed to be a fun-filled show, a few developments are quite silly. A few subplots might seem unnecessary and will be perceived as an attempt to simply stretch the run time of the fourth season. Also, though Season 4 lasts 8 episodes, viewers still don’t get the answer to an important question raised by the makers at the end of the previous season. A section of the audience might be dejected, as a result and also by the fact that there’s not much of a story movement.

Panchayat Season 4 Performances:
Jitendra Kumar continues with his fine act. One can see a change in Sachiv’s behaviour. He no longer gets easily irritated with the villagers as he has gotten used to their ways. This change is brought up subtly by the talented actor. Raghubir Yadav has minimal or zero dialogues in many important scenes and his eyes do the talking. He’s too good in the scene where he blasts his family and friends. Neena Gupta, as always, delivers a first-rate performance. Durgesh Kumar and Sunita Rajwar are outstanding, to say the least. With this season, their characters will be seen in a new light. Faisal Malik and Chandan Roy are adorable. Ashok Pathak is also lovable as Vinod. This time, there’s a separate subplot for him and it’s memorable. Bulloo Kumar, Gaurav Singh (Chottan Singh; MLA’s PA), Amit Kumar Maurya (Bam Bahadur), Tript Sahu (Khushbu; Vikas’s wife), Ram Gopal Bajaj (Nana ji) and Vishwanath Chatterjee (Sanjay Yadav; cop) lend able support. Swananad Kirkire makes his presence felt though his screen time is limited. Kirandeep Kaur (Chitra; MLA’s daughter) once again gets very little scope. Chunnulal (Lokesh Mittal; anti-corruption officer) is fair while Aan Tiwari (Billu aka Bill Clinton) is cute.

Panchayat Season 4 music and other technical aspects:
Anurag Saikia’s music is okay while the background score is well-woven into the narrative. Amitabh Singh’s cinematography is splendid and the lensman yet again scores with his scenes of the village. The setting is also realistic yet charming. Abhimanyu Jai’s production design and Karishma Vyas’ costumes are straight out of life. The action is minimal. Amit Kulkarni’s editing is slick.

Panchayat Season 4 Conclusion:
On the whole, PANCHAYAT SEASON 4 doesn’t have much of a story and also seems stretched. But the makers compensate for these minuses with ample humour, drama, conflict and politics. Notably, the season avoids the use of cuss words entirely, making it truly suitable for family viewing. Combined with its massive fan following, these factors are likely to help the current season garner record-breaking viewership.
