WI-W vs SA-W: West Indies Women clinches T20I series 2-1 to end 12-year drought against Proteas

West Indies Women registered its first bilateral T20I series win over South Africa Women since the start of 2013 as skipper Hayley Matthews struck a 50-ball 65 to guide her team to a six-wicket win in the third and final match at Three Ws Oval in Barbados on Monday.

The Caribbean side chased down a 148-run target with nine balls to spare to complete a 2-1 series win. Shemaine Campbelle chipped in with a crucial 42 and Chinelle Henry imparted the finishing touches with an unbeaten 11-ball 20.

Earlier, 20-year-old Miane Smit’s unbeaten 59 that guide the Proteas to a respectable 147 for six in 20 overs after they elected to bat in the series decider. She was supported by skipper Laura Wolvaardt’s 24-ball 28 but the duo couldn’t form a meaningful partnership.

However, Wolvaardt said her team was taking home a lot of positives from its tour of West Indies.

“Disappointed about today’s result, of course, particularly as I thought we had enough runs. But we didn’t get our bowling lines right – they scored too many runs square of the wicket and we got a few small things wrong,” Wolvaardt said.

“But Hayley played so well, it’s difficult to get her out. Overall on the tour I thought we unearthed some good young talent who put their hands up and made a good contribution to the team,” she added.

Earlier this month, South Africa had clinched the ODI leg of the tour, winning the three-match series 2-1.
