Actor and entrepreneur Anshula Kapoor recently spoke with Bollywood Hungama about her experience being part of the Indian adaptation of the reality show The Traitors. Known for its intense gameplay based on suspicion and deception, the format posed a new kind of challenge for Kapoor, who admitted it was far removed from her natural instincts.
EXCLUSIVE: Anshula Kapoor opens up on stepping out of her comfort zone for The Traitors; says, “This is a game that’s essentially built on deception and suspicion”
“Honestly, saying yes to doing a show like The Traitors and actually like walking into the palace to start playing the game, all of it is completely out of my comfort zone because this is a game that’s essentially built on deception and on suspicion, and it’s a game that’s all. And both of those qualities are something that are not natural to me. That’s essentially what makes this something that was out of my comfort zone,” Kapoor shared.
Despite feeling unsettled by the setup, Anshula saw the show as an opportunity for growth. “But as unnatural as the environment and the setup was, I wanted to push myself into an uncomfortable position and do something quiet out of the ordinary for me when I decided to do the show in that sense as well. And at the end of the day, this was a game. This is not real life. There was nothing to take personally. There was nothing to get overtly emotional about.”
Kapoor revealed that staying grounded was essential to navigating the high-stakes atmosphere within the show’s isolated setting. “I think when you’re in that environment, when you’re essentially cut out of the rest of the world, the only people that you’re having conversation with are your fellow contestants and participants. And you’re constantly in the environment where you are just trying to figure out who do you suspect the most? Who are you trying to analyse to pick out on one weakness that could reveal that they are the traitor.”
Describing the mental toll of the experience, she added, “It’s an exhausting environment to be in to begin with, but the only way to reconcile with that is the fact that it’s a game. It will end. And there is there is always that voice in the back of my head that kept reminding me to be true to myself, to be as real and genuinely as me as possible and not given to maybe being a little bit more dramatic or not given to feeling a little bit more emotional.”
Reflecting on her internal journey, Kapoor said she constantly reminded herself not to lose touch with her identity amidst the chaos of the game. “But for me, the only way to reconcile was to remain as true to myself and not get lost in the game in a way where I am constantly second guessing even what my character traits are in that sense. I don’t know if this made any sense.”
The Traitors, known for its psychological strategy and social manipulation, marks a notable departure from Kapoor’s usual public image. Her candid reflections offer a glimpse into the emotional and mental strength required to participate in a format that thrives on suspicion — something she confronted head-on in pursuit of personal growth.
