Valentin Altenburg, who guided Germany to a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, has been appointed head coach of the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers for the upcoming Hockey India League.

A highly regarded figure in international hockey, Altenburg, 43, is Germany’s youngest-ever senior men’s coach and boasts over a decade of coaching experience. He has also led Germany to silver medals at the European Championships in 2019 and 2021, along with a bronze in 2023.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Altenburg said, ”I’ve always admired Indian hockey, and I’m grateful to the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers for this opportunity. With a balanced squad of young and experienced players, I’m eager to contribute to the team’s success.”

David John, the Lancers’ strategy director, highlighted Altenburg’s Olympic credentials and experience working with Indian players, stating that his practical coaching approach would greatly benefit the team.

The Vedanta Kalinga Lancers will kick off its campaign against UP Rudras in Rourkela on December 30.
