At the recent screening of the 1981 cinematic gem Umrao Jaan, Anjini Dhawan stepped into the spotlight with a look that paid graceful homage to the timeless character immortalized by Rekha. Styled by Sheefa Gilani, Anjini’s ensemble was not just fashion—it was a visual tribute to cinematic history reimagined through a contemporary lens.

Draped in a rich red silhouette by Archana Jaju, Anjini captured the visual language of Umrao Jaan’s poetic world. The kurta, adorned with subtle motifs and detailed embroidery along the neckline, evoked the grandeur of Mughal-inspired aesthetics. Flowing gracefully into churidar pants and paired with a hand-embroidered dupatta, the outfit bore the elegance of old-world Lucknow while staying rooted in modern Indian couture.
The dupatta—with its earthy green base and delicate floral threadwork—softened the deep red of the outfit, creating a harmony of contrasts. Styled with traditional chaand baalis, hath phool (hand harness), and golden heels by Fizzy Goblet, the look paid close attention to the symbolic accessories that defined Rekha’s portrayal of the courtesan-poet.
Hair and makeup, too, were thoughtfully curated. Anjini’s soft, tousled curls framed her face in a way that mirrored Umrao Jaan’s gentle melancholy, while her kohl-rimmed eyes and nude lips added a touch of poetic intensity. The entire look was a studied blend of nostalgia and narrative, designed not to mimic, but to reinterpret—a reflection of how cinema continues to inspire fashion across generations.
Stylist Sheefa Gilani shared insight into the inspiration behind the ensemble on Instagram: “The choice of colour – red, the silhouette that defined Rekha’s character. The elements of her jewellery – the hath phool and the chaand baalis. The tousled, soft curly hair and the kohl eyes. We brought it all into our modern world.”
